In 1995, a company tried to sell "downloadable RAM". This is that story.

In the 90s, several companies sold "RAM Doubling" software:

The FTC eventually shut down SoftRAM for false advertising. RAM Doubler actually worked (sort of) using compression, but still couldn't create physical RAM.
